Hip internal rotation is the twisting movement of your thigh inward from your hip joint. If you try this while standing, your foot should also turn so that your toes are pointing toward the rest of your body. Your hip is a ball-and-socket joint attached to the uppermost part of your leg. The hip joint allows the leg to rotate inward or outward. Hip external rotation is when the leg rotates outward, away from the rest of your body. The hip region is located lateral and anterior to the gluteal region, inferior to the iliac crest, and overlying the greater trochanter of the femur, or "thigh bone". The hip joint serves as a central pivot point for the body as a whole. This large ball-and-socket joint allows simultaneous, triplanar movements of the femur relative to the pelvis, as well as the trunk and pelvis relative to the femur. Lifting the foot off the ground, reaching towards the floor, or rapidly rotating the trunk and pelvis while supporting the body over one limb typically demands strong and specific activation of the hips' surrounding musculature. Without these muscles, it would be difficult to maintain stability while standing, walking, or extending either of your legs away from your body.



Prolonged sitting can contribute to weakness in the external rotators of the hip. Injuries and hip surgery are other common causes of weak hip external rotators. Actions that use external hip rotation include getting into a car, pitching a baseball, and all other movements that require a person to rotate the pelvis while placing most of the body’s weight on one leg. The hip joint, scientifically referred to as the acetabulofemoral joint, is the joint between the femur and acetabulum of the pelvis and its primary function is to support the weight of the body in both static and dynamic postures. 

The hip joints have very important roles in retaining balance, and for maintaining the pelvic inclination angle. You use your hip internal rotators to walk, run, squat, crouch, and crawl. For every moment of the day that we are upright, our bodies are constantly working hard to oppose the effect of gravity. When lying down, we place the body in a posture that is less affected by the force of gravity, so we instantly take a huge compressive force out of the joints.  The external rotator muscles can become weak due to injury, surgery, or prolonged periods of inactivity.
